Weedy Sea Dragons

June 25, 2012

Weedy Sea Dragons at Georgia Aquarium

Georgia Aquarium is among a small group of aquariums in the U.S. to successfully hatch baby weedy sea dragons! More than 100 baby sea dragons were born off-exhibit, and to date, Georgia Aquarium has the highest newborn survivorship in the U.S. of this protected species. As a special exclusive to our blog readers, we are sharing raw, behind-the-scenes footage of the baby weedy sea dragons that were born in our Quarantine facility. Let’s see those babies!

Please note, the Quarantine facility sound is amplified on camera and this organic footage does not reflect the actual volume of our Quarantine facility. (We of course keep the volume down for the comfort of the young-ones!)

42 of the babies have been relocated to eight different aquariums across the country including Monterey Bay Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific, Shedd Aquarium and New England Aquarium.

Weedy sea dragons are some of our more unique animals at the Aquarium and always a guest favorite! Take a closer look at our Georgia-Pacific Cold Water Quest exhibit, and you might just find a weedy sea dragon hiding in the sea grass!
